i heard that it was originally offered to Kamal hassan. He couldn't do it but offered a friendly advice - that is not to show a brahmin as a violent man. Shankar took the advice and made Arjun a nonbrahmin by birth.
A few movies later Shankar was confident enough to think on his own. So Ambi turned out to be a violent brahmin.
I thought it was offered to Rajini...there is also a story linked to this. Since Rajini turned down the offer (due to obvious political controversies), Shankar christened Anil Kapoor's role in the hindi version 'Naayak' as Sivaji Rao!!!
